Swinnen Advances at All-American Championships

Oct. 4, 2002

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In the first day of pre-qualifying singles at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships, Sven Swinnen won his first match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-4. Swinnen advances to play Justin Gaard of Iowa Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (EST).

Senior Oded Teig also competed at the event, but lost his match, 6-1, 6-2, to Benedikt Dorsch. Teig's match was planned to begin in the morning, but got pushed back due to inclement weather. The match ended up beginning at almost midnight.

'Oded didn't play poorly,' head coach Chris Russell said. 'The guy he played is just that good.'

Swinnen's second round match was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, but the rain pushed the match time to Saturday morning.

Teig's competition at the tournament is not over. He will partner with Swinnen to compete in the qualifying doubles tournament scheduled to begin Tuesday. Teammate Manuel Kost will compete in the qualifying singles competition, which also begins at the beginning of next week.
