Oct. 6, 2002
The California men's soccer defeated San Jose State University Sunday evening at Spartan Stadium, 2-1, to collect its sixth straight win. The Golden Bears increase their overall mark to 7-2-1 for the season as the Spartans fall to 4-7-0.
Sophomore Mike Munoz led Cal to the victory, with one goal and one assist. Munoz scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, unassisted in the 56th minute. Freshman Pieter Berger collected the eventual game-winning goal off of a pass by Munoz in the 70th minute to give the red-hot Bears the 2-0 lead and to keep the streak going.
The Spartans fought back in the 86th minute as Frank Sanfilippo scored 20-yards out off of a free kick but it was not enough to clinch the win.
Cal took 11 shots to San Jose's 13. Bear keeper Josh Saunders collected four saves as Spartans' goalie Eddie Dominguez recorded five saves in the effort.
The Golden Bears are hoping to break the record for the most consecutive wins in Cal history. The record stands at eight, a feat last accomplished in 1986.
The 19th-ranked Bears return to action Friday, Oct. 11 for their first Pac-10 game, facing Oregon State at Edwards Stadium at 2 p.m. Conference play continues for Cal on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. also at Edwards Stadium against Washington.
