Oct. 6, 2002
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sven Swinnen performed admirably at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships before losing in the fourth round of pre-qualifying singles play. Swinnen lost to Peter Stroer of Texas, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32.
'He didn't play as well as he had been, and that happens,' head coach Chris Russell said. 'He's showing some good signs, though, of what he's capable of this season.'
Swinnen had won three matches to advance to the fourth round, including a tough three-setter in the second round. He advanced to the round of 32 with a convincing straight-set victory over Arizona's Paul Warkentin.
Swinnen and senior Oded Teig will compete in the qualifying doubles competition, which begins Tuesday. Sophomore Manuel Kost, the No. 63-ranked player in the preseason ITA rankings, will compete in the qualifying singles competition Tuesday as well.
