Oct. 10, 2002

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig won their first round doubles match at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships against Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor of Tulsa, 8-6. The tandem then came close to upsetting the No. 8 seed in the tournament, Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman of BYU, losing the match by the same score.

'They're making progress,' said Chris Russell, Oregon men's tennis head coach. 'They rallied well today and played at a whole different level than yesterday.'

In singles play, No. 63-ranked Manuel Kost lost his first round match against the No. 3 seed, Baylor's Benjamin Becker, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

'He played very good tennis,' Russell said. 'It was very evident he'll be at the level he needs to be to win this year.'

All three players suffered a stomach sickness during Wednesday's play, but they recovered for the most part in time for Thursday's play.

Kost will continue play in the consolation backdraw at the tournament against No. 40 Carlos Palencia of UC Santa Barbara. The match will be played Friday morning.
