Men's Tennis Cruises Through First Day Of ITA All-American Main Draw

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Washington men's tennis singles players Matt Hanlin and Alex Vlaski, as well as the doubles team of Vlaski and Ari Strasberg, advanced through to the second day of competition in the Men's ITA All-American Championships main draw held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., Thursday.
Hanlin and Vlaski earned wins in their first-round singles matches, while the team of Vlaski and Strasberg rattled off a pair of victories in both the first and second-round of doubles competition.
Vlaski, seeded 11th in the main draw singles rounds, defeated Karim Benmansour from Kentucky, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2. He will face South Carolina's Angelo Niculescu in second round action tomorrow.
Hanlin, the 15th-seed, took care of Louisville's Cody Conley in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, and is slated to face Balazs Veress from Cal in the second round of competition tomorrow.
Strasberg and Vlaski defeated their first-round opponent, Benn Stapp and Lee Walker from Memphis, 8-6, before taking care of second-round foes Evan Austin and Karim Benmansour from Kentucky, 8-5. They are set to face Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic from Texas A&M tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships and its women's counterpart - the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships - are the first of three national championship tournaments for collegiate tennis during the 2002-03 season. The two other tournaments (for singles and doubles only) are the Omni Hotels/ITA National Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
