Three Bears Still Alive at All-American Championships

Oct. 10, 2002

Chattanooga, TN - Sophomore Conor Niland and junior Balazs Veress both won their opening round matches of the men's 2002 ITA All-American Tennis Championships today, Oct. 10, at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN. Junior Raquel Kops-Jones represents the lone remaining Cal player to advance on the women's side.

The No. 71-ranked Veress played a tightly contested match against Mark Dietrich of Tennessee in the round of 64, eventually winning 7-6 (5), 6-3. The win advances the junior to a round of 32 match vs. the No. 15-seed Washington's Matt Hanlin, Friday, Oct. 11.

Niland, ranked No. 82 in the nation, breezed past Tulsa's Dustin Taylor in straight sets today, 6-4; 6-2. The win sets up a match with Virginia Tech's Saber Kadiriat, Friday, Oct. 10. Kadiriat is fresh off his 6-4; 3-6; 6-3 upset of the tournament's top-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky.

Kops-Jones defeated Jessica Roland of Texas A&M in straight sets, 6-4; 7-6 (1) in first round action. The win pits Kops-Jones against the tournament's No. 2-seed Georgia's Agata Cioroch in tomorrow's second round action. Cal junior Catherine Lynch dropped her first round match to USC's Jewel Petersen, 7-6 (2); 6-2, eliminating her from the singles main draw competition.

In doubles competition, the tournament's No. 6-seed, Veress and Robert Kowalczyk, defeated Florida's duo of Oliver Levant and Eleazar Magallan, 8-5. The win advances the pair to the round of 32 match against Kirk Jackson and Daniel Klemetz of Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Oct. 11. On the women's side, the top-seeded pairing of Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano ran through the first two rounds of qualifying, only to be knocked out of the main draw in the final round by Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels of Kentucky, 8-6.

In other men's tennis action, senior Jeff King and sophomore Patrick Briaud will all compete at the Bulldog Classic taking place this weekend, Oct. 11-13, in Fresno. A total of 64 players from 12 teams will be competing in the event taking place at both the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center at Fresno State and Clovis West High School.
