Baseball Ready To Open Fall Season

Oct. 11, 2002

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team opens its second season under head coach Andy Lopez on Monday, Oct. 14, and Wildcat fans who come out to watch should have a roster handy.

The Wildcats start their three week fall season with just 13 players returning from last season's 31-24 team. A total of 27 newcomers will take the field for the first time on Monday in hopes of wearing the Cardinal and Navy for Arizona in the regular season in 2003.

Returning this season are pitchers Sean Rierson (7-5, 4.69 ERA), a 26th round selection in the 2002 draft, Joe Little (6-6, 5.38 ERA), Jason Snyder (2-1, 3.24 ERA) and Chris Goodman (5-2, 4.86 ERA).

Joining the returning pitchers are outfielders Brian Anderson (.275, 5 HR, 30 RBI) and Jeff Van Houten (.295, 7 HR, 34 RBI), infielders Pat Reilly (.317, 2 HR, 25 RBI), Mo Duran (.272, 9 HR, 42 RBI) and John Hardy (.328, 5 HR, 38 RBI) and catcher Richard Mercado (.292, 1 HR, 21 RBI).

Among the highly anticipated group of newcomers are a pair freshmen, catcher Nick Hundley (Redmond, Wash./Lake Washington HS) and infielder Trevor Crowe (Portland, Ore./Westview HS). The two were both selected in the June MLB draft, but opted to come to Tucson rather than sign professional contracts.

Joining Hundley and Crowe in the freshman class are hurlers John Meloan (Houston, Texas/Taylor HS), Pat Lawler (Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus HS) and Kris Sanchez (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro HS). Lawler and Sanchez were two of the top high school pitchers in Arizona last season and Meloan tossed three no-hitters for Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, including a 20-strikeout no-no his senior year.

Other freshmen who look to make an impact in the fall are infielder Brad Boyer (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) and outfielder Derek Decater (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS)

The junior and four-year college transfers include five pitchers, two infielders and an outfielder. Junior Richie Gardner (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC), sophomore Mark Worrell (Boynton Beach, Fla./Indian River CC) and redshirt freshman Kevin Guyette (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Georgia Tech) highlight the new transfer hurlers.

Gardner, a 6-foot-3 right-hander, was among the top junior college pitchers at Santa Rosa JC in 2001. Worrell is the last high school player to earn a victory over the Cuban national team and originally signed to play for coach Lopez at Florida. Guyette redshirted the 2002 season for College World Series participant Georgia Tech.

Transfer first baseman Zach Bies (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale CC) hit 20 homers and drove in 70 runs for Scottsdale CC in 2002. Outfielder Chipper Crum (Tucson, Ariz.) played for Pima CC in Tucson for the last two seasons.

The fall workouts are open to the public and media and will feature 13 intra squad games and four practice days beginning Oct. 14 and ending Nov. 2. Recaps and box scores from the intra squad games will be available on-line at the baseball page of Arizona's official Website
