Women's Soccer Falls To No. 2 Stanford
Oct. 11, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Natalie Sanderson's goal on a penalty kick at 3:02 set the tone early Friday and the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal defeated the No. 15 USC Trojans, 2-0, in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams at McAlister Field.
Stanford (10-1-0, 1-0) added another goal in the second half when Marcie Ward scored at 67:26 with her seventh goal of the season.
The Women of Troy (5-4-3, 0-1) played even with the Cardinal after the first goal as Stanford held a 13-12 advantage in shots for the game. Stanford goalie Nicole Barnhart made six saves to record the shutout while USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson also had six saves.
'We started slow and were not prepared in the first 10 minutes of the game,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'I thought we played well against Stanford, but we made two crucial mistakes and they took advantage. We have to learn from this loss and learn how to finish our chances.'
USC continues Pac-10 play on Sunday (Oct. 13) against No. 7 California at 1 p.m.
