Beavers Drop Heartbreaker To Top-Ranked Stanford In Overtime
Oct. 13, 2002
STANFORD, Callif. - -
The OSU men's soccer team (9-3-0) dropped its second match of the weekend Sunday 1-0 at top-ranked Stanford's (11-1-0) Maloney Field.
The winning goal came off of a header by Cardinal forward Darren Fernandez four minutes, 53 seconds into overtime. Johanes Moliza set Fernandez up for the shot when he lofted a free kick into the middle of the box where Fernandez was able to capitalize on the opportunity.
Defense was stiff on the day as the Cardinals out-shot the Beavers 10-4 through 95 minutes of play.
Senior Peter Billmeyer played another tough game in goal for the Beavers, accumulating six saves on the day. Billmeyer, who had five saves against Cal on Friday, is No.2 all-time in saves for OSU with 215.
'The team played very well,' head coach Dana Taylor said. 'We played the way we were playing prior to the Cal game. I'm pleased with our performance. Everyone played well today.'
In testament to the tough defensive battle, 53 fouls were called, including four yellow cards for OSU and three for the Cardinals.
Billmeyer's counterpart, Robby Fulton, recorded his fifth shutout of the year.
OSU was averaging 2.9 goals per game coming into the weekend and had not been shutout since losing to UCLA 1-0 in 2001.
The Beavers next contest is at Washington on Oct. 20.
