Oct. 17, 2002
Los Angeles, Calif. -- In one of the best women's basketball match-ups to hit Southern California in recent years, the Dec. 14 USC versus Tennessee game not only will feature two tradition-rich teams, but will include a reunion of USC's 1983 and 1984 NCAA women's basketball championship teams. To fit the occasion, the match-up will be played at the legendary Forum in Inglewood.
Between them, these two programs have won eight national championships - USC owns two (1983, 1984) and Tennessee claims six (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998). Both teams enter the 2003 season ranked among the Top 25 in preseason polls.
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of USC's first women's basketball national title (1983), players from both championship squads have been invited to join the Dec. 14 celebration. Confirmed guests include: twins Pam (1984 All-American) and Paula (1982, 1983 All-American) McGee, Cynthia Cooper (two-time WNBA MVP), Cheryl Miller (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 Naismith Award winner), Tracy (Longo) Rath, Yolanda Fletcher, Timi (Pitzer) Pikard, Melissa Ward, head coach Linda Sharp (two-time national champion), assistant coach Fred Williams and graduate assistant coach Kathy (Hammond) Cotton.
