Johnson, Blue Lead WSU Cross Country At Pre-NCAA Meet

Oct. 19, 2002

Terre Haute, Ind.-- The Cougar men's cross country team ran well to place 22nd out of 36-teams, while the Cougar women finished 36th out of 38 teams at the Asics/Pacesetter Pre-National Invitational Saturday, at Terre Haute, Ind.

Because over 90 schools competed, the event was split into two men's and two women's races and the WSU women ran in the first race while the Cougar men competed in the second race.

Ian Johnson was the surprise of the meet for the Cougar men, placing 54th with a time of 24:51.80 to lead the team. Danny Wolf came out too fast but still managed to finish well in 77th place. Also competing for the Cougars were Mark Wicklander 105th, Mike Heidt 172nd, Kyle Barker 175th, Justin Ireland 222nd, and Reid Carrell 224th.

'The men did pretty well, they stepped up and beat a few teams that they lost to earlier in the year,' WSU Head Coach Jason Drake said. 'Overall, the men ran better than they had all year.'

Perennial power Colorado claimed victory in the men's race with 87 points, beating out Iona who finished second with 172 points. Jorge Torres of Colorado won the meet with a time of 23:34.8

Anna Blue led the Cougar women with an 81st place finish in a field of 259 runners. Ana Cabrera ran well to place 170th. Other WSU finishers included Julia Corbett 184th, Hillary Smith 194th, and Molly Bull 209th.

'The women ran real well but we still have a long way to go before we can compete with the likes of Colorado and Stanford,' said Drake. 'They're in a higher league than us but we'll be right there in a few years with the effort these women give.'

Brigham Young won the women's race with 55 points, followed by Colorado with 143. Washington, the only other Pac-10 team in the race, placed 11th. Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina was the women's individual champion with a time of 19.56.50

The WSU teams will take a weekend off to train for the Pac-10 Championships, Saturday, November 2, at Pasadena, Calif.
