No. 1 Cardinal Records Fifth Straight Shutout, Downs Oregon 3-0
Oct. 20, 2002
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford got one goal in the first and two more in the second half as the top-ranked Cardinal rolled to a 3-0 victory over Pac-10 rival Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. In front of 952 fans, Stanford outshot the Ducks 25-1 and improved to 13-1-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
The Cardinal pressured early, with Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) getting two consecutive shots just three minutes into the game. After many close opportunities, Stanford got on the board at 25:06. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) stole the ball from the Oregon defender and the two ran side-by-side, with Ward just getting the ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) before she was tripped. Wallis took the ball and finished, marking her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
Oregon came back 10 minutes later and got its only shot off in the 34th minute. Dara Wone's attempt came up short, as Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) was there for the save. Stanford then dominated the final 10 minutes of the half, with Ward nearly scoring in the 43rd minute. Ward also recorded back-to-back shots, but Oregon keeper Sarah Peters made some fantastic saves before the break.
Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA) registered Stanford's first shot in the second period and three minutes later, Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) found the back of the net for a 2-0 Cardinal advantage. After the Oregon defense failed to clear the ball, Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) controlled the ball and played a perfect cross to Tapscott. Tapscott netted her first career goal at 53:45 when her flick header sailed by the Duck keeper.
Ward continued to get good looks and in the 59th minute, her shot hit the post and then she had consecutive attempts that were blocked and saved. The Cardinal added their final goal at 79:49 when Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) passed the ball to Amy Grady (Pawcatuck, CT) from the corner. Grady took the ball and sent a shot from 25 yards out that curved passed the Oregon keeper for her first career goal.
Stanford outshot Oregon 25-1 for the game, led by Ward's 10 shots. Barnhart recorded her 10th shutout of the season and fifth consecutive. Peters finished with nine saves in goal for the Ducks as they fall to 1-10-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal will continue league action this weekend at Washington. Stanford will battle Washington State on Friday (Oct. 25) and Washington on Sunday (Oct. 27).
