No. 7 Bruins Shutout Arizona State, 3-0
Oct. 20, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Three second half goals by seventh-ranked UCLA (11-3, 3-1 Pac-10) was too much as the Arizona State women's soccer team (8-3-2, 1-2 Pac-10) was shutout for the first time in 23 matches, 3-0, today at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
Both teams held each other scoreless in the first half, but each team also missed opportunities to go up a goal. ASU's Patrice Feulner got behind the Bruin defense to go one-on-one with Bruin goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo, but Feulner kicked the ball just left of the post. UCLA had its own chance when Jill Oakes drilled the ball from about 15 yards out off the top of the cross bar, but ASU cleared the ball to keep the match scoreless.
Ten minutes into the second half, UCLA broke through off of a corner kick in the 56th minute. Stacy Lindstrom took the corner from the left side and punched it towards the goal box where Kendal Billingsley headed it into the net. UCLA went up 2-0 in the 70th minute when Michelle Mangiardi got a pass from Lindsay Greco in front of the box and put it past ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald. The Bruins sealed the match in the 79th minute when Lindstrom shot the ball past Fitzgerald from about 15 yards out into the upper right corner. Crystal James was credited with the assist.
The Sun Devils could not get much going from a tough Bruin defense as they only produced six shots on the day, while UCLA collected 19.
Next up for the Bruins will be a meeting with cross-town rival USC on Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. That match will be at USC's McAlister Field.
