Oct. 21, 2002
BERKELEY, CA - Mia Jerkov, a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter from Split, Croatia, has been chosen as the Oct. 21 AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week after breaking the Cal school record with 39 kills Oct. 17 versus Washington and then recording 38 kills Oct. 18 versus Washington State. For the two matches against the Washington schools, Jerkov tallied 77 kills and 42 digs, earning Pac-10 Player of the Week honors as well.
It is the first time in school history a Bear volleyball player had earned national player of the week honors and it was also the first time a Cal player had consecutive matches with 30 or more kills. On the season, Jerkov has a team-leading 406 kills, 226 digs, 28 service aces, and a team-best 6.15 kills, 3.42 digs and 0.42 service aces per game. She also leads the Pac-10 in both total kills (406) and points (452.0, combining kills, service aces and blocks).
Jerkov is in contention to be Cal's first All-America volleyball player since Sylvie Monnet earned the honor in 1983.
