Harvey Selected To U.S. U-20 Team For CONCACAF Qualifying
Oct. 22, 2002
UCLA freshman defender Jordan Harvey has been selected to represent the U.S. Under-20 National Team at the CONCACAF Group B qualifying tournament for the World Youth Championships. The U.S. will host the tournament in Charleston, S.C. Nov. 13-17.
Harvey, who has one assist in nine games with the Bruins this season, could miss UCLA's final four regular season games against Cal (Nov. 8), Stanford (Nov. 10), San Francisco (Nov. 14) and Fresno State (Nov. 17). He had previously missed the Bruins' season opener on Aug. 30 against Boston University while playing with the U-20s at an international tournament in Spain.
'We're extremely happy Jordan's going to be involved with the Under-20s,' said UCLA head coach Tom Fitzgerald. 'He's been working very hard for several years to make the U-20 team. It's a great experience, and it should give him tremendous competition. When he comes back, he should be in great form for what we hope to be our playoff situation.'
The tournament, which marks the first time U.S. Soccer has hosted an Under-20 qualifying tournament since 1980, will take place at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC, with doubleheaders on Nov. 13, 15 and 17. The U.S. will be joined by Haiti, El Salvador and Canada in Group B, with the top two teams advancing to the FIFA World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates from March 25 - April 16, 2003.
The U.S. Under-20s have posted a 14-7-9 record in 2002, scoring more than twice as many goals as their opposition (55 to 27). At the C.O.T.I.F. XIX Torneig Internactional Tournament last month in Spain, the U.S. surprised many by topping Italy, Ukraine and Uruguay to advance to the final, where they fell 1-0 to an older Brazil team.
