Four Bears Seeded in ITA Regional Championships

Stanford, Calif. - In the fourth individual event of the season for the Bears, the California women's tennis team will travel to Stanford to take part in the 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Northwest Regional Championships, taking place Friday, Oct. 25 through Monday, Oct. 28 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University.

Cal will send a total of nine players to the tournament with four of them seeded in the Top-10. Junior Raquel Kops-Jones, who is 5-2 in fall competition, is the highest of the Bears' seeds at No. 5. Teammates No. 6 Catherine Lynch, No. 7 Christina Fusano and No. 10 Jieun Jacobs round out the list of seeded Cal players, all receiving first round byes.

Juniors Kristen Case and Nicole Havlicek, sophomores Carla Arguelles and Brooke Borisoff and freshman Jessica Shu will also be representing the Bears in tournament action.

Case enters the regionals with a 1-2 fall record, after competing in the Bulldog Classic in late September. She will face Monica Martin of Idaho in first round action at 8:00 a.m. Havlicek is currently 2-2 on the year after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Bulldog Classic before losing to teammate Catherine Lynch, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Most recently, Havlicek teamed with Arguelles in taking the doubles title at the Saint Mary's Invitational last weekend. She will take on Santa Clara's Mariko Kawakami in the first round of the ITA Regionals, Friday at 8:00 a.m.

Arguelles, who is 6-2 through two fall tournaments, most recently advanced to the quarterfinals of the Saint Mary's Invitational before being ousted by eventual runner-up Edith Pakay of Loyola Marymount, 6-4, 6-1. Arguelles will face a first round match with Cerissa Drum of Cal Poly at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Rounding out the action, Borisoff will take on Sunel Nieuwoudt of Idaho at 9:30 a.m., while Shu will see Washington's Jessica Svanfeldt at 8:00 a.m.

Four doubles teams will be in action as well, with Kops-Jones and Fusano awarded the No. 2-seed and Jacobs and Jody Scheldt the No. 4-seed. All seeded players have an automatic bye into the round of 32, to be played Friday afternoon.

After claiming the Saint Mary's Invitational title last weekend, the duo of Arguelles and Havlicek will face Saint Mary's' Kate Harden and Catalina Fillol at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. Lynch and Shu will tangle with Oregon's Ester Bak and Jaime Marshall at 3:00 p.m.
