Cougars Hold Second After Day One of Pacific Invitational

Oct. 25, 2002

Stockton, Calif. - STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Washington State University women's swim team captured second place, in the Division I standings, Friday during day one of the two-day Pacific Invitational. WSU scored 187 points in the first day of competition trailing California who scored 346 points. Brigham Young holds onto third place by one point with a score of 166 over Pacific.

The Cougars were led by freshman, Jane Copland, who contributed 34 points to the WSU score. Copland grabbed second in two individual events. Copland, a native of New Zealand, swam the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:01.70. She also completed the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:07.86. Copland moved into the Cougar all-time top ten in both events. She now holds the number four spot in the 500 free and the sixth spot in 200 IM.

Senior Jill Olson added 22 points for the Cougs with two top ten finishes. Olson also captured a position in the Cougar all-time top ten with a fourth place time of 17:34.93 in the 1650 freestyle. Olson finished the 500 free in 5:10.14, giving her a tenth place finish, as well as a season best time.

WSU picked up 39 of their points in the 50 free. Co-captain Lindsay Henahan led the group of five Cougars to top sixteen finishes, with a fourth place time of 24.84. Behind her were: fifth place, Lesley Ouellette, 24.91; twelfth place, Sasha Taylor, 25.46; thirteenth place, Sara Schmeid, 25:48 and in sixteenth place, Sheena Mills with a time of 26.15.

The results of the 50 free were pleasing to WSU Head Coach Erica Quam.

'Our team goal was to improve our individual times, and get swimmers into the top 16,' Quam said. 'I am pleased that we are accomplishing this.'

Despite the smaller size of the WSU squad, Coach Quam was satisfied with the performance of the Cougs.

'We've got a smaller group of swimmers,' stated Quam, 'and we are competing really well against the bigger teams like Cal.'

Other top sixteen finishers for the Cougars included Becca Cohen with a fourteenth place finish in the 500 free, 5:14.27, and a sixth place finish in the 1650 free, 17:58.21. Nicole Chinn also grabbed a top sixteen finish with a time of 2:15.85 in the 200 IM, giving her fourteenth place.

In 400 medley relay, the Cougars finished second behind Cal with a time of 3:58.21.

'We raced really well as a team in the 400 medley,' said Quam.

The Pacific Invitational wraps up Saturday, Oct. 26, with a 9 a.m. PST start time.
