Day One Results: ITA Northwest Regional Championships

Stanford, Calif. - All of the seeded Cal players won their singles matches today to move on to the Round of 32 of the 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Three doubles tandems also advanced to the Round of 16.
After a first round bye, the sixth-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones jumped all over Santa Clara's Janelle Kaloi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the round of 32. Sixth-seed Catherine Lynch followed suit, defeating USF's Gabriela Ruiz, 6-4, 6-4, to advance. After a bye in the first round, 7th-seeded Christina Fusano cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-0 match over Jennifer Berk of Portland. No. 10 Jieun Jacobs also moved on to the round of 32 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over of Washington State's Mel Humphrey.
Sophomore Brooke Borisoff finished 2-0 on the day, defeating Idaho's Sunel Nieuwoudt in the first round 6-2, 6-4 before dropping Portland's Cheryl Holub 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the Round of 32.
Kristen Case, Carla Arguelles and Nicole Havlicek each finished with a 1-1 record on the day. Case defeated Monica Martin of Idaho 6-1, 6-0, but fell to Washington State's Zsofi Fodor 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Arguelles handed Cerissa Drum of Cal Poly a 6-0, 6-0 loss in the first round and was then beaten by ninth-seeded Daria Panova of Oregon 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Havlicek swept by Santa Clara's Mariko Kawakami 6-1, 6-1, in the first round before falling to eighth-seeded Darija Klaic of Washington 7-5, 6-2.
In other Cal action, Jessica Shu fell in the first round to Washington's Stephanie Svanfeldt 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles competition, the duo of Arguelles and Havlicek finished 2-0 on the day. In first round action, the pair defeated Catalina Fillol and Kate Harden of Saint Mary's, 8-3, then cruised to an 8-1 victory in the second round of the doubles competition over Idaho's Karen Kunishi and Sunel Nieuwoudt to move on to the Round of 16. The Bears' teams of Kops-Jones/Fusano and Lynch/Shu also advanced to the third round. Kops-Jones and Fusano defeated a duo from Washington State 8-0, while Lynch and Shu posted a victory over Washington's Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe, 8-3, to advance.
After a first round bye, the pair of Jacobs and Jody Scheldt dropped their Round of 32 match to Fresno State's Vlatka Jovanovic and Katherine Winterhalter, 8-4.
Play will continue tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., starting with the singles consolation draw at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
