Men's Soccer Shuts Out Fresno State 1-0

Oct. 25, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman Jeff Hoover's first collegiate goal in the 58th minute proved to be the game-winner, lifting Washington men's soccer (4-6-3) over Fresno State (3-7-4), 1-0, in front of 708 fans at Husky Soccer Field Friday evening.

The victory was Washington's first Pac-10 win this season, breaking a three-game losing streak against conference opponents. The Huskies improve to 1-3 in the Pac-10, while Fresno State drops to 0-3-1 in the league. The win also marked UW's second shutout so far this year.

Both teams played 58 minutes of scoreless soccer, before Hoover's goal put the Huskies on top. Hoover's shot from the left side of the field some 30-yards out, deflected off a Bulldog defender and into the far corner of the net.

'I thought we deserved to win which is encouraging,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Fresno State's a good team. We outshot them and with any luck we would have had some goals, but they are a tough team. We have the challenge of playing them again in a week's time. One win can do wonders for your confidence and if we can parlay this into a good performance Sunday (against UCLA), we've really got a shot. I'm very happy with the team's performance.'

The Huskies outshot Fresno State 14-12, with an 8-6 shot advantage coming in the second half. UW junior goalkeeper Daniel Waltman tallied four saves en route to his first shutout of the season. FSU goalkeeper Jeremy Proud also recorded four saves.

Hoover and junior Seth Marsh led Washington with three shots apiece. Fresno State's Andrew Gregorio led the Bulldog attack with three shots as well.

UW will look to continue it winning ways when it hosts fifth-ranked UCLA, Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2:15 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. Washington looks to extend its five-game unbeaten streak against the Bruins in Seattle. The last time UCLA won a game in the Emerald City was Sept. 13, 1980.

The annual UW men's soccer alumni match will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Husky Stadium East Practice Field.
