No. 4 UCLA Withstands OSU Offensive Attack
Oct. 25, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State dropped its first home game of the season as it was shut out by No. 4 UCLA 3-0 in Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer action Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field.
The Beavers (10-4-0, 1-3 Pac-10) outshot the Bruins (9-1-2, 4-0) 25-14, but UCLA goalie Zach Wells made 11 saves to earn the shutout.
'I thought that we played well today,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'Anytime you look at statistics and when they show in the favor they did for us, we had to be doing something right. The final stat is the score and we definitely didn't put it in the net.'
UCLA took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a Tim Pierce goal. Dru Hoshimiya led Pierce up the left sideline with a pass that set up Pierce for a one-on-one with an OSU defender. Pierce sent a shot from 15 yards over Oregon State keeper Peter Billmeyer to the far post for the early advantage.
Pierce netted his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute when Matt Taylor sent a centering pass in the box that Pierce tapped in from two yards out.
Cliff McKinley completed the scoring at the 73:01 mark when Wells delivered a penalty kick in the OSU third setting up an advantage for McKinley leading to UCLA's final goal.
The OSU offense pressured the UCLA defense in the second half, firing 16 shots and forcing Wells to make eight saves. Nine of Oregon State's 11 corner kicks came in the second half.
'I was proud of the way the guys performed, but we were just a little unlucky on the offensive side,' Taylor said. 'Give credit where it is due. UCLA finished on the offensive chances they did have.
'Our focus now shifts to Fresno State on Sunday. It is important to get guys healthy, come out ready and do the things we were successful with today, and hopefully put it in the back of the net.'
The Beavers entered the game 4-0 at Lorenz Field this season and Friday was the team's first conference home game. UCLA ended a two-game losing skid in Corvallis, having dropped last season's meeting 1-0, and losing 2-1 in 2000.
Oregon State hosts Fresno State immediately following the OSU women's game Sunday against Arizona, which starts at noon.
