Oct. 26, 2002
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Women's crew competed at the annual Head of the American regatta on sunny Lake Natoma in a 5000 meter event. Conditions were great for racing as the Cardinal raced in pairs, eights, and a four. In the pair event, all-American Sabrina Kolker and Melissa Haury placed first with freshmen Abby Loughery and Alexis Peterson placing fourth and Alison Appling and Alicia Gutierrez finishing seventh.
Five of the six athletes in the pair event doubled into the open eight event where Stanford 'A' started second behind California and Stanford 'B' started in the 10th spot. Stanford 'A' charged early in the race to catch the boat from California and passed them at the 2000 meter to go mark finishing first in the event. Stroke Sabrina Kolker commented, 'This race was a huge step for us technically. We felt really calm and and had really solid rhythm in the boat. ' This was the first race of the fall for Stanford 'B' and they passed five boats but were passed by California 'B' to finish fourth overall.
The Varsity four wrapped up the day of racing with a fifth place overall finish. The Women's Crew team races at the Head of the Lake regatta in Seattle in two weeks.
