LOS ANGELES - The No. 7-ranked UCLA women's soccer team took over sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 Sunday, defeating No. 17 USC, 2-0 in a battle of cross-town rivals at USC's McAlister Field. With the victory, UCLA improves to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play. With the loss, the Women of Troy fall to 8-5-3 and 3-2 in conference action. The win also helps UCLA in the season-long race for the Lexus Gauntlet Cup.
With Bruin freshman Iris Mora on leave with the Mexican National Team and junior Sarah-Gayle Swanson unavailable with an injury, the door was left open for several Bruins to step up and contribute. Sophomore Crystal James rose to the occasion Sunday, putting UCLA on the board in the 37th minute of play on a shot from about 10 yards out. James dribbled into the USC box, bending in a right-footed shot past USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson. It was James' first goal of the season.
Following a 1-0 UCLA lead at the half, the Bruins would add an insurance goal at the 63:14 mark of the second half on a header by freshman Stacy Lindstrom. Amy Fazio lofted a ball into the USC box and Lindstrom was just able to get a head on it and flick it over Peterson into the top of the net.
With just under five minutes to play, USC had its best scoring opportunity of the match after a penalty kick was called in the UCLA box. The Bruins got a break when USC forward Ali Fennell's kick went high over the Bruin crossbar.
UCLA, which controlled the tempo throughout the match and constantly put pressure on the USC defense, outshot the Women of Troy, 26-6. The Bruins now lead the all-time series with USC, 10-2-1 and haven't lost since 1998.
The Bruins return home this week to host Oregon and Oregon State at Drake Stadium. UCLA will host Oregon this Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday will mark the final regular-season home contest for the Bruins.
