No. 7 Cal Shut Out 2-0 At Washington State
Oct. 27, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - No. 7 California suffered a 2-0 shutout at the hands of Washington State Sunday afternoon at Cougar Soccer Field. The Bears' road struggles continue to haunt them as they dropped to 9-6-1 (2-4 Pac-10), while the Cougars improved to 8-5-2 (2-1-2 Pac-10).
Cal looks forward to returning home for the final three regular season games, as the Bears are 7-1-0 at Edwards Stadium and 2-5-1 away from Berkeley.
WSU's Kim Morgan scored in the fourth minute with a header off a free kick from Christie Spear to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Much of the first half was a defensive struggle as each team recorded just three shots. The pace was slowed by a combined 24 fouls called in the first half. Overall, WSU was called for 29 of the 48 fouls whistled during the game.
In the second half, both teams created scoring opportunities, but neither could convert until Shelby Brownfield beat Cal redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio in the 76th minute to increase the WSU lead to 2-0. Sulprizio, who made four saves today, made her first start since the Sept. 29 contest at Hartford.
Cal junior Kim Yokers, a U.S. Under 21 national team player, did not play against WSU.
The Bears next entertain top-ranked Stanford, Sat., Nov. 2 at 1 p.m., at Edwards Stadium.
