FILL GILL: Join the Beavers as they try to break the single-match attendance record on Friday. The current Gill Coliseum volleyball record is 2,559, which was set against Oregon in 1996.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK'S ACTION: OSU had perhaps its most successful trip to the Bay Area last week. The Beavers ended a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 win at Cal, marking the first time OSU had ever swept Cal in Berkeley. OSU lost 3-2 to No. 6 Stanford, but it was the first time the Beavers had played a five-game match at Stanford and the first time OSU had won a game there since 1993. Laura Collins' efforts earned her Pac-10 Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career. She averaged 13.25 assists, 2.12 digs and 1.12 kills per game on .333 hitting over the weekend. OSU hit .296 against Cal for its best hitting percentage against a Pac-10 team this year. Karah Rhoades hit .367 with 16 kills to lead OSU in the win, while Megan McMillan led the Beavers with 19 kills against Stanford. The Beavers got two key bench performances from Katelyn Healy and Joscelyn Hannaford as well. Healy hit 1.000 with eight kills against Cal, while Hannaford hit a season-best .458 with 13 kills against Stanford.
COMMENTS FROM COACH NANCY SOMERA:
On heading into the Civil War after a solid weekend in the Bay Area
'It feels good to get off to a good start in the second round of Pac-10 play, but I think every team in this conference can attest to the fact that you can be on cloud nine one week and then hit rock bottom the next. We have to take things one match at a time, but it sure feels good to get a win. It was hard to keep pointing out all the good things this team has done, but still see the losses.'
On the team's improvement over the past couple weeks
'We've been playing better and better each week. The onslaught of injuries has affected team chemistry more than anything. It's hard to flow as a team unit when that unit keeps changing week to week. It's taken a little while for some of the younger, less experienced players to replace the injured veterans, but now we're jelling and they know what to expect from one another.'
NEUBURGER MOVES INTO TOP 10: Nikki Neuburger had 25 digs in the Bay Area last week, moving her into OSU's top 10 for career digs. The senior ranks 10th all-time at OSU with 945 career digs. Neuburger averages a Pac-10 best 4.10 digs per game this season and was 24th nationally last week (the latest national statistics were unavailable at press time). She's had double figures 15 times - including four with 20 or more digs. She's currently on pace to tie Rachel Hochgesang for the single-season digs per game record. Hochgesang averaged 4.10 dpg in 1993.
SERIES RECORDS: Oregon State is 34-43 all-time against the Ducks, with the Beavers having won the last three Civil War contests. OSU won this year's first meeting, 30-22, 30-25, 30-25, at Oregon on Oct. 3. Allison Lawrence led the Beavers with 14 kills and a .314 hitting percentage, and Michele Solomon and Karah Rhoades added 10 kills apiece. Lindsay Closs led UO with 10 kills.
A LOOK AT OREGON: The Ducks (10-15, 0-11) are still searching for their first Pac-10 win. They came close last week, holding a 2-0 lead at Cal before losing in five games. UO was swept at Stanford in its other match last week. Lindsay Closs leads the Ducks with 3.81 kills per game, ranking eighth in the Pac-10. Closs is also eighth in the league with 1.06 blocks per game. Dariam Acevedo adds 3.28 kills per game, and Lindsey Murphy leads the defense with 2.86 digs per game.
HEAD COACH NANCY SOMERA: OSU is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Nancy Somera. Somera, whose career record stands at 48-59, arrived at OSU in February 1999 after spending time as an assistant coach at USC since 1991. Last season, Somera guided the Beavers to a 17-12 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. While at USC, Somera helped the team earn eight consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and helped develop eight USC All-Americans. Somera also played collegiately at USC, and she was a two-time All-Pacific-10 Team selection. She still holds the USC record for career and single-season aces.
