Cougar Novice Squad Prepares for Fall Scrimmage

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State University women's novice rowing squad takes on Gonzaga, Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Wawawai Landing...WSU's novice team, which is made up of first-year rowers, will race three eights against Gonzaga's three novice eight boats...the scrimmage will be split into run time pieces...the races will begin with an eight minute set and will end with the teams racing three six minute sets...novice coach Vita Scaglione is looking to continue her success after coaching the 2001-02 novice team to a second place effort in the Pacific-10 Championships and a first place finish in the San Diego Crew Classic.
WSU Novice Coach Vita Scaglione on facing Gonzaga: 'This scrimmage is intended to be fun and give the novice team an opportunity to get a taste for competitive racing. Hopefully this scrimmage will inspire some excitement to carry the team through the winter training.'
What Happened Last Week: The Cougar novice team competed in its first race of the season last week against Gonzaga at the Head of Spokane at the Spokane River...in the 7000m race the team finished second to Gonzaga...in the 3500m race, the WSU (B) team finished third, behind Gonzaga's (B) and (C) squads...the Cougar's (C) and (D) teams placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Directions to Washington State's Boathouse: From Highway 195 (north or south), turn west on Wawawai Road at the blinking yellow light...travel on Wawawai Road for 10 miles...the road will end at a stop sign...turn right and drive down into the canyon...six miles at the bottom of the canyon...go past the county park on the right and over the railroad tracks the boathouse is a cinderblock building on the right park on the side of the road or in the parking lot south of the boathouse.
