Oct. 31, 2002

LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's rowing team will compete in its first fall race this Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival to be held at the Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach. The race will mark the first outing for the Trojans' first-year head coaches Kelly and Zenon Babraj.

Sponsored by Union Bank of California, the event will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. Crews will launch from the west end of Lido Island and the 2,000-meter course will conclude at the aquatic center.

The Women of Troy are planning to race five eights and mix up the lineup during the event. USC will have three boats competing in the women's open eight race at 8 a.m. and two crews racing in the women's novice/freshman eight category at 9:30 a.m.

Last season, USC captured its first victory of the 2001 season by placing first in a field of 21 teams at the event. USC 'A' (varsity eight) finished the course in 15:45 - nearly one minute ahead of second-place finisher UC Davis (16:41). Loyola Marymount, UCLA and San Diego State rounded out the top five. The Trojans' JV 8 also competed in the varsity race as USC 'B,' placing 13th with a time of 17:34. USC raced four novice boats and finished sixth, 12th, 17th and 20th respectively.
