Nov. 1, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - Kelly Nelson scored her conference-leading 12th goal in the second overtime Friday, lifting Arizona to a 2-1 upset over 20th-ranked Washington in a Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer game at Murphey Stadium.
The Huskies (8-6-3) dropped to 3-2-1 in Pac-10 play with their second straight conference loss. Arizona (6-9-1) won its first Pac-10 game in six tries. The Wildcats defeated UW for the first time in eight all-time meetings.
After a scoreless first half, Washington struck first on a 48th-minute tally by red-shirt freshman Kim Taylor who tied for the team lead with her seventh goal. Taylor found the net from 15 yards away off a pass from junior Melissa Bennett who registered her school-record 17th assist of the season. Bennett ranks second nationally and has 10 more assists than any other Pac-10 player.
Arizona scored the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Tymarie Novak chipped a shot from the top of the box over UW goalkeeper Hope Solo at 89:03.
Nelson ended nearly 15 minutes of overtime with a golden goal at 104:49. She received a pass from Candice Wilks and lofted a 10-yard shot into the Husky goal.
Solo recorded five saves for the Huskies who outshot Arizona by a slim 13-12 margin. Natalie Juarez made six saves for the Wildcats.
Washington plays its final regular-season road game Sunday against 17th-ranked Arizona State. The Huskies close out the season at home next weekend against UCLA and USC.
