Beavers Drop Civil War Volleyball Match, 3-1
Nov. 1, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four Oregon players finished with double-figure kills as the Ducks snapped a 32-match Pac-10 losing streak with a 3-1 win over Oregon State in the Civil War, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers on Friday. Game scores were 30-24, 27-30, 30-26, 33-31.
Four Beavers also finished with double-figures, but hitting errors cost OSU throughout the match. The Beavers (7-14, 2-10 Pac-10) hit .134 and had 40 hitting errors, including 16 in the first game alone. Oregon (11-15, 1-11) hit .177 for the match.
'Oregon played really well. They took care of the ball and did some nice things defensively,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'We didn't take care of the ball on first contact, which is something we said would be key for this match.'
Kelly Russell led the Oregon attack with 14 kills on .310 hitting. Lindsay Closs(.357) and Lauren Westendorf (.294) added 13 apiece.
OSU had a chance to send the match to a fifth game after a late run in game four. Down 26-22, OSU went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 27-27. Back-to-back kills from Rhoades and Solomon then gave the Beavers a game-point opportunity, but Closs slammed down a kill to end the run. The game was tied three other times, the last at 31-31, before UO scored twice on a kill and a block by Russell to win the match.
'We fought hard and had an opportunity to win game four, but we couldn't put it away and that's disappointing,' Somera said. 'I thought if we had taken game four, we would have had the momentum in game five. It would have been anyone's match.'
K.C. Frederic led the Beaver defense with a season-high 16 digs, and Nikki Neuburger added 14 as OSU outdug the Ducks 70-69. OSU got double-doubles from Lawrence (22k-11 digs) and Laura Collins (52 assists-10 digs). UO's Dariam Acevedo had a match-high 20 digs.
The Ducks had the edge at the net, outblocking OSU 13-11. Solomon had a match-high eight, the most by a Beaver this season. Closs had seven for Oregon.
The match will be replayed on FOX Sports Northwest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2.
