Men's Tennis Completes Successful First Day at ASU Thunderbird Invite

Nov. 1, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - Three Ducks began play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Friday, finishing the day with a combined record of 3-2. Thomas Bieri, Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig began competition in the four-team, three-day tournament with Arizona State, Northern Arizona and Auburn.

'We started off the day really well, winning all three singles matches against Arizona State guys,' assistant coach Ross Duncan said. 'The guys were unfortunately unable to sustain the effort.'

Bieri got things started for the Ducks, winning his first round match in straight sets over Arizona State's Chris Stewart, 6-3, 6-4. Prior to the first round of play, Bieri won a three-setter over another player from Arizona State. Teig completed the three-match sweep over the Sun Devils with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Pim Van Mele. Swinnen was the only Duck to lose in singles play on the day, with Northern Arizona's Jeremy Coll knocking off Swinnen in three, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles play, Oregon lost its only match of the day, with Teig and Swinnen losing 8-4 to Arizona State's tandem of Lethcer and Van Mele. Duncan was impressed with the first-day performance, but expects bigger things from the Ducks Saturday.

'We plan on coming out and firing on all cylinders tomorrow and sustaining the effort throughout the day,' Duncan said.

The remaining members of Oregon's tennis team will host the Duck Classic at the Student Tennis Center beginning Saturday. The two-day tournament will feature three teams from the state of Oregon. The Ducks will compete with Portland and Portland State, with the matches beginning both days at 9 a.m. and running until approximately 6 p.m.
