Quick Score In OT Dooms Beavers
Nov. 1, 2002
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - -
Overtime has been unkind to the Oregon State women's soccer team this year, and that trend continued on Friday as the Beavers dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 16 USC in Los Angeles 35 seconds into the extra session.
With the loss, OSU drops to 8-8-2 overall and 1-6-0 in Pac-10 play, having lost three conference contests by one goal. In four overtime matches, OSU now has two losses and two ties.
After a scoreless first half in which the Beavers were outshot 10-1, OSU rallied to take a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on Tessa Baker's second goal of the year.
Baker split the defense in the middle of the field and lobbed a shot over the head of USC keeper Julie Peterson.
The Trojans (9-5-3, 4-2-0) answered with the equalizer nine minutes later when team scoring leader Ali Fennell flicked in a shot off a cross from Tina Sutorius. The shot was headed by Fennell in the box, and deflected off an OSU defender into the goal.
Facing light pressure from OSU at the overtime kickoff, the Trojans were able to set up an attack and send a cross to the far post, where Jocelyn Leche capitalized the dish from Ashley Casas for the game-winner.
'We came out a bit flat, but neither team played terribly well in the first half,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'We came alive in the second half though. Baker scored on a nice through-ball in the middle and flicked it over the keeper's head.
'I was proud of the way we battled back in the second half and took the lead. We played more directly than normal, but we ended up giving USC two goals. You just can't give your opponent goals in conference play,' Fennah said.
'We have to regroup and go play UCLA. We need to get one win this weekend.
Pac-10 saves leader Jo Fletcher stopped eight USC shots Friday.
The Beavers take on No. 6 UCLA Sunday at 1 p.m.
