KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - -
After 27 holes, the Oregon State women's golf team is in 11th place at the College of Charleston's Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.
In a rare format, the teams play 27 holes Monday and Tuesday for a total of 54. The format is in effect due to shorter daylight hours, and it allows the field to complete 54 holes in two days.
The Beavers opened with a 320 Monday morning in their final tournament of the fall season, and are at 475 overall after the first nine holes of the second round.
Freshman Leah Whiting led OSU, shooting a 5-over 77 and firing a 36 on the third nine for a 113 and a tie for 17th at the par-72 Oak Point Golf Course. Whiting is looking for her second top-20 finish of the year.
Alex Lee, who stepped in for Stacie Ferguson when Ferguson became ill and could not make the trip, stands tied for 41st with a score of 119. Lee, a freshman, equaled her career-best with a 78 in the opening round.
'They're playing better in the second round,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'Alex Lee played very well in the first round filling in for Stacie Ferguson.'
The Beavers trail 10th-place UNC-Greensboro by five strokes, and Whiting is nine shots back of leader Rachel Lester of Kentucky. OSU is in the hunt for its third top-10 finish of the year.
Kansas State holds a seven-shot lead over No. 14 Tulane, shooting an 8-over 440.
