Women's Golf Lowers Scores, But Remains 11th At Charleston Intercollegiate

Nov. 5, 2002

Freshman Leah Whiting tied for 22nd to help the Oregon State women's golf team to an 11th-place finish at the College of Charleston's Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, played at the par-72 Oak Point Golf Course.

Whiting posted the lowest three-round total for OSU with a 227, and the Beavers lowered their scores each round to finish at 929.

OSU opened with a 320, but cut its scores to 307 and 302 over the final two rounds.

'We improved each round, which is what we were looking to do,' 13th-year coach Rise Lakowske said. 'This was a different kind of golf than what we're used to - the grasses here force you to play some different shots if you go in the rough,' she said of the Bermuda grass course.

Whiting tallied a 73 in the second round to go with 77s in the first and third. The Hilo, Haw. native has finished 22nd or better in three of her five tournaments this year.

Freshman Alex Lee, who filled in for Stacie Ferguson when she became sick before the team left for the tournament, finished with the best three-round total of her career at 231, including a final-round 75. She tied for 32nd.

'Alex Lee's scores counted every round, and she did a nice job filling in for Stacie,' Lakowske said.

Laura Skinner tied for 48th with a 237, and Alex Lucio and Ashlei Pendleton totaled 239 and 240, respectively.

Tulane, ranked No. 14, took a two-stroke victory over Kansas State by shooting 8-over 872. Oklahoma, ranked No. 20, was third with an 886.

Individually, KSU's Christine Boucher ran away with the title thanks to a red-hot final-round 64. Her 12-under 204 gave her an eight-shot win over Oklahoma's Hope Edge.

The Beavers wrapped up their fall season in South Carolina, and won't compete again until the Bay Area Classic Feb. 17-18, hosted by California.
