Scott Lipsky/David Martin Reach Doubles Semis At Omni National Indoors
Nov. 7, 2002
FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. - Stanford University seniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) advanced to the doubles semifinals of the 2002 Omni Hotels National Collegiate Indoor Championships with a pair of victories on Thursday at the Brookhaven Country Club.
Lipsky and Martin have now reached at least the doubles semifinals of the last three 'major' collegiate tennis tournaments --- the NCAA Championship, the ITA All-American and the Omni National Indoors. The two-time All-Americans will face Richard Barker and William Barker of Rice in the semifinals on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (PT).
Lipsky and Martin, who are the second seeds in the 16-team draw, opened the tournament with an 8-5 first round win over Fero Babej and Sebastian Fitz of Auburn-Montgomery. The Cardinal seniors then defeated Pac-10 rivals Oliver Charroin and Chris Stewart of Arizona State 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
Martin, who is Stanford's only entrant in the 32-player singles draw, jumped out to a good start by outlasting Brian Wilson of Illinois 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) in first round action. The sixth-seeded Martin plays Todd Widom of Miami of Florida in the second round on Friday and 8:00 a.m. (PT), and with a victory, will advance to the 12:00 p.m. (PT) quarterfinals against either second-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky or Matt Hanlin of Washington.
Stanford's other doubles entry of freshmen K.C. Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) and James Pade (Woodside, CA) split a pair of matches on Thursday. Corkery and Pade fell to Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M 8-4 in the main draw first round, but bounced back with an 8-2 consolation quarterfinal win over Juan Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez of Northern Illinois. Corkery and Pade will face top-seeded Michael Calkins and Amer Delic of Illinois in the consolation semifinals on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
The Omni Hotels National Collegiate Indoor Championships is Stanford's final tournament of the fall, and runs through Sunday.
