Nov. 8, 2002

Myrtle Beach, SC - -- The 10th-seeded Washington men's golf team lost to seventh-seeded Florida 4-1 in the opening round of the Collegiate Match Play Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Huskies met Colorado during the second round, but a late start did not allow the match to conclude until Saturday. The 15th-seeded Buffaloes fell to second-seeded August State in the opening round of the 16-team event.

Florida is ranked fourth in this week's GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index while the Huskies moved up two spots to 20th in the poll.

Washington's only win in the Florida matchup came when John Robertson defeated Dwight Rogers 1-up. The Gators' Camilo Villegas defeated Washington All-American Brock Mackenzie 2 and 1. James Vargas beat Dan Potter 1-up, Brett Stegmajer downed Conner Robbins 3 and 1 and Ryan Cochran beat Corey Prugh 3 and 2.

Top-seeded Clemson advanced in the winners bracket during the first day by defeating Purdue 3-2.
