Second-Ranked UCLA Nips UW 2-1 in Women's Soccer

Nov. 8, 2002

SEATTLE - Sarah-Gayle Swanson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 71st minute Friday, leading second-ranked UCLA to a 2-1 win over Washington in a Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer game before a crowd of 872 at Husky Soccer Field.

The Bruins (15-3) improved their conference record to 7-1 with their sixth straight win. They trail only top-ranked Stanford in the polls and the Pac-10 standings.

Washington (8-8-3) dropped to 3-4-1 in Pac-10 play. UW needs at least a tie in their regular-season finale to secure the .500 record that is the minimum requirement to be eligible for consideration from the NCAA Tournament Committee.

The Huskies, who host No. 15 USC on Sunday at noon, are likely to be selected for the Tournament if eligible as their strength of schedule is exceptional. Seven of the Huskies' eight defeats came against teams that are currently ranked, including five setbacks against teams listed in the top 10.

Despite being outshot 9-7 in the opening 45 minutes, UCLA owned a 1-0 halftime lead on the strength of Kim Devine's unassisted tally. She collected a deflection off a Husky defender near the right post and fired a 10-yard liner into the lower left corner at 32:23.

Swanson increased the Bruin advantage to 2-0 on a 10-yard header from the left side at 70:37. A pair of Bruins were credited with assists on the play as Stacy Lindstrom fed a long pass to the right wing where Kendal Billingsley retrieved the ball and found Swanson with a cross.

Washington drew within 2-1 in the 81st minute, parlaying a free kick into a goal by freshman Sara Davis. Liz Taylor blasted a 30-yard free kick that was deflected at the right post by UCLA goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo. Davis gathered the rebound and scored from seven yards out at 80:27.

The Huskies had a goal disallowed in the 31st minute. Jaime Carstensen headed in a Melissa Bennett corner kick, but was whistled for a foul on the play.

Senior goalkeeper Hope Solo registered six saves for the Huskies, four of them in the second half when UCLA posted a 8-4 shot advantage. Lombardo finished with four saves for the Bruins who outshot UW 15-13 for the game.
