Golf In Sixth At Vegas Founders

Nov 11, 2002

Henderson, Nev. - The Colorado women's golf team carded a first round 312 and sits in sixth place, just nine strokes off the lead, after 18 holes at the Las Vegas Founders Showdown at the Anthem Country Club here Monday.

"It's the same story we've been telling all fall," said head coach Anne Kelly. "We're playing okay, but we need four scores under 75. We're as good as anyone out here, we just need to prove it."

Host UNLV leads the team race after the first day with a 15-over-par 303, a slim three strokes lead over New Mexico (306). Brigham Young's Margaret Gibby is atop the individual leader board with a 1-over-par 73, a single stroke ahead of UNLV's Tina Mabanta (74).

Colorado senior Erin Kerr and freshman Maria Persson Gulda are in an eight-way tie for ninth after the first of three rounds, as both shot 76 on the tough, but fair, course. Jolene Fellhauer not only rebounded from a virus that kept her down at the Landfall Tradition last week, but she also rebounded from a quadruple bogey on a par-five on the front nine to shoot par on the back nine as the senior carded a 79, her strongest showing in four rounds, for a share of 29th today.

"The wind picked up while we were out there and caused some problems," added Kelly. "It's a great course with tough, fast greens that can cause some problems."

Allison Rella had some bad bounces that resulted in an 81 after today's round as did Lynn Ann Moretto who had a rough day and turned in an 86 after a run-in with some hazards, "water and otherwise," said Kelly.

"This course requires patience. We're not out of by any means," assured Kelly. "We have two days and two rounds left. If we can get those four scores, it would be a nice way to end the fall schedule."
