ASU Football's Howard and Barth Selected Academic All-District

Tempe, Ariz.- Arizona State lineman Phil Howard and kicker Mike Barth have been selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VII football team. Howard, a senior, has been selected first-team All-District and has a 3.95 grade point average in finance. The former walk-on from Scottsdale, Ariz., earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors in 2001. Howard has played in seven games this season.

Kicker Mike Barth has been selected second-team All-District with a 3.25 grade point average in finance. Barth, a senior, earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors in 2001. In 2000, Barth was a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable-mention selection. In 2001 Barth led Arizona State in scoring with 70 points and currently leads the team this season with 92 points. He has converted 17 of his 26 field goal attempts and has made all 41 of his extra point attempts.

The Verizon Academic All-District VIII football team is selected by CoSIDA members in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and the province of British of Columbia. First-team selections move on to the national academic All-American ballot. Other Pac-10 first-team All-District VIII are Arizona's Jason Johnson, UCLA's Bryce Bohlander, California's Ryan Jones, Oregon's Dan Weaver and Jared Siegel, Oregon State's Dennis Weathersby and Bill Swancutt.
