Four OSU Football Players Earn Academic Honor

CORVALLIS - All-America cornerback Dennis Weathersby heads a list of four Oregon State football student-athletes earning Verizon Academic All-District VIII honors on the team announced Thursday.

Weathersby, a senior, was a first-team selection as was sophomore defensive end Bill Swancutt from Salem. Landing second-team honors was senior wide receiver Seth Trimmer from Corvallis and junior place kicker Kirk Yliniemi from Monmouth.

The Verizon team is selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information directors).

Weathersby is a two-time Verizon District VIII selection on the All-Academic team, plus he has been selected three straight years on the Pac-10 All-Academic squad. Weathersby is a Liberal Studies major and carries a 3.22 GPA. Weathersby holds the OSU career record for passes defended with 60 and has been a four-year starter for the Beavers.

Swancutt leads OSU with nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss. He ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in sacks and fourth in tackles for loss. Swancutt has a 3.24 GPA and has not declared a major.

Trimmer has already graduated with a 3.31 GPA in business administration and is currently doing graduate work.

Yliniemi carries a 3.63 GPA in construction engineering. Yliniemi has booted a career-long 50-yard field goal this year and currently is tied for the longest consecutive field goals made streak with nine. He is kick 9 out of 10 field goals this year and 36 out of 37 PATs.
