Laura Collins Earns Verizon Academic All-District Honors

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Laura Collins was one of 19 athletes named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII volleyball team, which was announced Thursday. Collins was a third team selection.

Collins, a junior setter, carries a 3.77 grade point average in business. Her all-district honor is the first of her career. She was an honorable mention Pacific-10 All-Academic pick last season.

Collins ranks second in the Pac-10 with 12.68 assists per game this season, and she was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on October 28 for the second time in her career. She has 1,040 assists this year and is fourth in career assists at OSU with 2,405. Collins was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 Team pick last season.

In order to be eligible for the Verizon Academic All-District Team, an athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve and be in at least their second season of competition. District VIII consists of California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and British Columbia.

A total of 80 athletes were nominated. The six first team selections are eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in December.
