Track and Field Signs First Prep Standout for 2003-04

Nov. 14, 2002

SEATTLE - First-year Washington head coach Greg Metcalf notched the first recruit of his tenure as head coach Thursday when Auburn's Carl Moe signed a letter of intent to enroll at UW in 2003. Moe, considered by many to be the state's top prep distance runner, is the first athlete to sign with Washington during the early signing period, which began Thursday.

Moe, a senior at Auburn-Riverside High School, capped an unbeaten 2002 season with a victory last Saturday at the 2002 State 4A Cross-Country Championships in Pasco, in the process becoming the first runner from Western Washington to win the 4A individual title in 12 years.

'He's an outstanding young man,' said Metcalf of his first signee. 'We're thrilled that Carl will be coming to Washington.'

Moe, who boasts personal bests of 4 minutes, 11 seconds for 1,600 meters and 9:06 for 3,200 meters, placed third at the 2002 State Track Championships in both events, and is expected to compete in both cross-country and track for Washington.
