Jessica Edwards Delivers For Women's Soccer In NCAA First Round

LOS ANGELES - Junior Jessica Edwards scored on a 20-yard free kick Friday at 2:53 of the first overtime period and the USC Trojans defeated the San Diego Toreros, 1-0, in an NCAA Tournament first-round match at UCLA's Drake Stadium. USC will face UCLA in second-round action on Sunday (Nov. 17) at 1 p.m.
USC (11-7-3) won for the fifth straight time in games that went to overtime and now has a 5-0-3 overtime record this season. The Women of Troy also defeated San Diego (11-7-3) in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, 2-1, at the Coliseum.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie on Sept. 27 at McAlister Field and the first 90 minutes of regulation Friday was played at a similar tempo. San Diego (11-7-3) held a 3-2 margin in shots in the first half, but play opened up in the second half with both teams trading strong scoring opportunities.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Peterson made five saves for the Women of Troy, including a stop on San Diego's Michelle Rowe on a breakaway.
San Diego was called for a foul in the first overtime period as Edwards took the direct kick. Edwards hit the upper left corner for the game-winner just outside the penalty box. It was Edwards' fifth goal of the season.
