Cal Defeats Rice, 146-105

BERKELEY - The University of California women's swimming team (5-1) defeated Rice University (3-1), 146-105, in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex Sunday afternoon.

The victory was an all-around contribution from the Golden Bears squad as several different Cal swimmers recorded wins. Junior Natalie Coughlin led the Bears finishing first in both the 200 free (1:50.99) and 100 back (56.09). She also posted the fastest time in the 100 fly (53.62), though her performance was counted as an exhibition swim.

Junior Danielle Becks took first in the 100 free (51.50), sophomore Amy Ng won the 200 back (2:03.11) and freshmen Kate Tiedeman and Ashley Chandler added a win apiece in the 1000 free (10:19.01) and 500 free (4:58.72) respectively. Ng also scored the fastest time in the 400 individual medley (4:23.57), though her performance was counted as an exhibition swim.

Cal's relay teams also did well, as the team of freshman Helen Silver, sophomore Marcelle Miller, freshman Flora Kong and Becks placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:48.14). The 200 free relay team of freshman Cheryl Anne Bingaman, Coughlin, senior Michelle Harper and Kong swam the fastest time in the event at 1:35.48.

Another highlight for the Bears was Miller's runner-up finish in the 200 breast. Her time of 2:18.05 met NCAA 2003 qualifying standards.
