Women's Basketball Records Exhibition Win
Nov. 17, 2002
The UCLA women's basketball team used twenty-plus scoring games from senior guard Michelle Greco and freshman forward Julia Pitts to defeat West Coast All-Stars, 90-76, in an exhibition game played today in Pauley Pavilion. Greco tied for game-high honors with 26 points and added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Pitts totaled 23 points, hitting 11-13 field goals, and dominated the glass with 14 boards.
The Bruins led from start to finish in the game in their final tune up for the start of the regular season. The West Coast All-Stars, who were led by former Long Beach State star Akia Hardy's 26 points, cut the lead to one on a couple of occasions in the first half, but could get no closer and trailed 46-38 at the half.
Also in double figures for the Bruins were freshman guard Nikki Blue (16) and senior guard Natalie Nakase (11). Freshman Lisa Willis came off the bench to score five points, grab five rebounds and record three steals.
'We talked about treating this game like a real game,' said Bruin head coach Kathy Olivier. 'The first exhibition contest, we did not approach it with the same amount of intensity as we would in the regular season. For today's game, we wanted to focus on having the same level of intensity as we would for the first game of the season.'
The Bruins will open the regular season at Hawaii on Saturday, November 23. The first UCLA home game of the season will be on Tuesday, December 3 against St. Mary's at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
