Nationally-Ranked Stanford Receives First Round Bye in 2002 NCAA Tournament

Nov. 18, 2002

Indianapolis, In - The Stanford men's soccer team was among 48 teams selected on Monday to compete in the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

The teams will be vying for the right to compete at the 2002 NCAA Men's College Cup on December 13 and 15 in Dallas, Texas, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

Wake Forest, the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season champion, was awarded the #1 seed. The Demon Deacons posted a 14-1-4 record on the year. Maryland is the #2 seed after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title. UCLA, the Pacific-10 Conference regular season champion, was named the #3 seed, while St. John's is the #4 seed. The remaining top eight seeds are Boston College, Virginia, Connecticut and Virginia Commonwealth. The additional eight teams with first-round byes are Stanford, California, Indiana, Penn State, SMU, Creighton, Clemson and St. Louis. The teams with a first-round bye will host the second round game.

Twenty-two conferences were awarded automatic bids for the 2002 tournament. The remaining 26 teams were selected at-large. Four Pac-10 teams were selected (Stanford, UCLA, California, Oregon State).

'I'm excited to have a first round bye, and host a second round game (Nov. 27),' said Cardinal head coach Bret Simon. 'This will give us time to heal our players injuries. We hope this will be the start of a championship run.'

Stanford will host either Portland or Oregon State in the second round game at Harry Maloney Field on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Oregon State will travel to Portland on either Friday (11/22/02) or Saturday (11/23/02).

Stanford has faced Oregon State twice this year. On Nov. 15, Stanford scored three unanswered goals to earn a 4-1 victory in Corvallis. Darren Fernandez scored twice, while Johanes Maliza added a goal and an assist. Earlier in the year (10/13/02), Fernandez scored at 4:53 of the overtime to lift then top-ranked Stanford to a 1-0 overtime victory over the then 18th-ranked Beavers.

In Stanford's third game (9/8/02) of the season, the Cardinal scored a 2-0 decision over the Portland as Matt Janusz and Mike Wilson scored goals over the then 14th ranked Pilots. Robby Fulton started his first game of the season in goal and recorded the shutout along with four saves.

Stanford will be making its ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament, including the last five years. Stanford is 9-8-1 in NCAA Tournament play.

Stanford will enter the 2002 NCAA Tournament with a 14-4-2 overall record. The Cardinal finished third in the Pac-10 with a 5-3-2 mark.
