OSU Faces Portland In First-Ever NCAA Tournament Game

NCAA SELECTION: The Oregon State men's soccer team discovered on Monday that, for the first time in school history, it has been selected to play in the 48-team NCAA Men's Soccer Championships.
OSU, fresh off its school-record 13th win last Sunday over No. 6 California, will travel to No. 22 Portland for a first-round matchup Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at UP's Harry A. Merlo Field.
The Beavers (13-7-0) and Pilots (12-5-1) met on Oct. 2 in Corvallis, and OSU came away with a 2-1 win on a goal in the final minute by Joe Zaher. OSU has won the last two meetings with UP.
The winner of the Oregon State-Portland game will travel to Stanford to take on the No. 15 Cardinal (14-4-2) on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Stanford has a first-round bye.

RECORD WINS: With its 3-0 win over No. 6 California on Nov. 17, Oregon State set a school record for wins in a season with 13. Among those 13 wins are two victories against teams ranked at the time of the game - No. 12 Tulsa (3-0 score) and No. 6 California. Also, the Beavers defeated Washington for the first time on Oct. 20 after going 0-16-1 in the teams' first 17 games. OSU then completed the season sweep with a 6-3 win on Nov. 10 in Corvallis.The Beavers also won four Pac-10 games, which is twice as many as they've won the last two years combined.
LAST ACTION: After a 4-1 loss to No. 22 Stanford on Nov. 15, OSU came back with a 3-0 shutout of No. 6 California on Sunday to clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Aaron McHardy scored twice against Cal and assisted on Alan Gordon's score against Stanford for a total of five points on the weekend. Joe Zaher scored OSU's final goal against the Bears, giving him 10 goals for the year.
A LOOK AT PORTLAND: The No. 22 Pilots (12-5-1 overall, 5-1-0 West Coast Conference) enter the NCAA tournament having won five of their last six games... the Pilots lost an Oct. 2 match with OSU 2-1 on a goal by Joe Zaher in the 90th minute... UP has been shutout just twice this year, in a 2-0 loss to then No. 1 Stanford and by San Francisco by a count of 2-0... UP has a 2-2 record against ranked opponents this year, having beaten No. 16 Creighton 3-2 and No. 7 Loyola Marymount 1-0, and losing to No. 1 Stanford 2-0 and No. 9 Connecticut 2-1... offensively, Nate Jaqua leads four players in double-figure scoring with 25 points (nine goals, seven assists)... Sheldin Maistry, Alajandro Salazar, and Eric Cronkrite have 16 or more points... in goal, Curtis Spiteri has a 0.84 goals-against average in 17 games and has 57 saves to his credit.
OSU HISTORY WITH PORTLAND: OSU has won the last two meetings with the Pilots, earning a 2-1 win this year and a 2-1 win in 2000. Overall, OSU is 3-10-0 in the series that dates back to 1989. OSU's only other win was a 2-0 decision in 1994.
