Fourteen UCLA Men's Soccer Players Earn All-Conference Acclaim
Nov. 21, 2002
Walnut Creek, Calif. - A league-high and school-record 14 UCLA men's soccer players were selected to the Pac-10 All-Conference team, including all 11 starters. Three Bruins received first-team honors - Adolfo Gregorio (Hilmar/Hilmar HS), Tim Pierce (Dana Point/Santa Margarita HS) and Scot Thompson (Rancho Santa Margarita/Trabuco Hills HS).
Gregorio, a junior midfielder, has recorded five goals and three assists in 2002. This is his third all-conference honor and his second consecutive first-team selection.
Pierce, a senior forward, leads the team in all scoring categories with 10 goals, seven assists, four game-winning goals and 27 points. He scored a team-high four goals and three assists in conference play and was twice voted the Pac-10 Player of the Week. This is Pierce's second consecutive first-team nod.
Thompson, a senior defender and honorable mention selection in 2001 and 2000, is the only Bruin player to start in all 19 games this year. The team co-captain has paced a UCLA defense that has posted eight shutouts and a team goals against average of 0.65. In conference play, the Bruin defense recorded five shutouts and a team goals against average of 0.58.
Three Bruins earned second-team all-conference nods - senior midfielder Jimmy Frazelle (Folsom/Bella Vista HS), defender Tony Lawson (Palmdale/Quartz Hills HS) and goalkeeper Zach Wells (Costa Mesa/Newport Harbor HS). Wells is a repeat second-team choice, while Frazelle and Lawson are first-time selections.
