Nov. 22, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 13 Washington State University volleyball team ended the regular season with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-15, win over Oregon State Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
With the victory, Washington State moved to 21-7 overall, 11-7 and tied with Arizona for third in Pac-10 Conference play while Oregon State is now 7-20, 2-16 in league action.
This is the most Pac-10 wins for the Cougars since the 12 wins in 1997.
Oregon State's Katelyn Healy had a team-high nine kills and four blocks. Libero Nikki Nwburger had 13 digs.
The first game had 14 ties as the Beavers and Cougars went on six and five point-runs but kept the game close. Chelsie Schafer tagged six kills (.500) and the Cougs had four blocks while OSU was held to .196 hitting and no blocks. WSU takes the first game, 30-27.
Scrappy play prevailed on both sides of the court but kept the Beavers in contention until the final points. The Cougars were up 28-25 when Allison Lawrence and Katelyn Healy landed back-to-back kills to bring OSU within one point. WSU's freshman setter came up with a huge block of Healy to put the Cougs at game point. Schafer placed a kill in the corner for the 30-27 WSU win. The Cougars hit a mere .085 while OSU also struggled to a .088.
Washington State hit the night's best in the third game, .206 and slammed back the Beavers to -.108 for the 30-15 win.
'We came out a little less than inspired but I think what we did is get it done,' Cougar Coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'I think we expended as little energy as possible but managed to get it done. And that's what we wanted to see. And the serving was great, I think that what really kept us in the match.'
WSU will take most of the week of Thanksgiving off, regrouping for practice beginning Friday, Nov. 29, and await the NCAA Championship Tournament selection announcement, Dec. 1.
