No. 13 Washington State Sweeps Beavers On Senior Night

Nov. 22, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - It was senior night at Oregon State, but it was Washington State senior Chelsie Schafer who led her team to victory in the final Pacific-10 volleyball match of the season for both teams. Schafer had a match-high 13 kills to lead the No. 13 Cougars to a 30-27, 30-27, 30-15 win over the Beavers on Friday night.

Still, coach Nancy Somera was pleased with her team's performance in its final home match of the year.

'Games one and two were some of the best volleyball we've played in recent weeks,' she said. 'We had great court movement. We played well in all areas of the game.'

Schafer, who was the only player on either team to pick up double figures, hit .312 for the match.

Katelyn Healy was OSU's kill leader for the first time in her career, picking up a career best nine kills and hitting .533 in the process. Healy also led OSU with four blocks, matching her career high in that category as well.

OSU's seniors had several key contributions as well. Nikki Neuburger had a match-high 13 digs, lifting her season total to 377, which moved her into 10th place on OSU's single season chart. Megan McMillan chipped in eight kills and nine digs, and Michele Solomon had five kills and two blocks. Tami Halleck also saw one game of action.

While seniors Katrina Nelson and Joscelyn Hannaford had to sit out with injuries, Nelson still got involved with the senior night activities by singing the national anthem prior to the match.

'I'm so proud of these six seniors for what they've done over the course of their careers here. They've brought this program to a competitive level that we hope will keep growing, and they were the seeds that got it going,' Somera said.

The Beavers have one match remaining in the 2002 season. They play at Portland on Tuesday, November 26 at 5 p.m.
