Trojans Sweep Arizona, Arizona State

Nov. 22, 2002

Senior co-captain Erik Vendt won the 1000y free and the 200y breast while freshman Ous Mellouli took firsts in the 200y and 500y free as No. 6 USC defeated No. 9 Arizona State, 139-104, and downed No. 13 Arizona, 175-66, in a double-dual meet at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday (Nov. 22).

The Trojans improved to 2-1 with the victories.

Vendt won the 1000y free in 8:51.03 while taking the 200y breast in an easy 2:03.48. He also posted an NCAA 'B' cut during a second-place swim in the 200y back (1:48.84).

Mellouli, off to a fast start to his Trojan career, won the 200y free in 1:37.76 (B cut) and the 500y free in 4:23.78 (also a 'B' cut, but a little slower than he swam earlier at Texas). USC, in fact, went 1-2-3 in the 500y free as Matt Peterson (4:33.62) and Michael Kauffman (4:36.94), finished second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Paul Fahey won the 200y IM (1:51.53) as USC posted another 1-2-3 finish with junior J.D. Abercrombie taking second in 1:52.11 and Mike Gausman finishing third (1:53.23). Senior co-captain Jeff Lee won the 200y fly in 1:47.22 ('B' cut).

The 400y medley squad of Lee, Abercrombie, freshman Mihaly Flaskay and Mellouli won in 3:18.80.

USC will compete against the same schools on Saturday (Nov. 23) in a double-distance dual meet that begins at 10 a.m. at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
