Beavers Lose Heartbreaker To Vandals In Season Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Dwayne Williams scored 23 points as Idaho fought offfoul trouble to beat Oregon State 76-73 in overtime Saturday night.

It was the season opener for both teams, played shortly after the Beaversbeat Oregon in the annual Civil War football game just steps away from GillColiseum.

OSU's Brian Jackson led all players with 27 points for the debut of coachJay John, a former Arizona assistant who took over the Beavers this season.

Williams hit on a layup and a foul shot with 2:32 left in overtime to giveIdaho a 70-65 lead.

Jackson narrowed it with a jumper and a free throw as Tyrone Hayes becamethe third Idaho player to foul out.

But Rashaad Powell's layup put the Vandals up 72-68 and Zach White's freethrows with 53.3 seconds left made it a six-point lead. Philip Ricci answeredwith a 3-pointer with 24.6 seconds left, but the Beavers couldn't get anycloser.

After the Beavers led most of the first half, the Vandals took over in thesecond, leading by as many as six points with 5:01 to go on Justin Logan's3-pointer.

When Jon Tinnon fouled out with 2:01 left, Ricci hit a pair of free throwsto tie it at 63.

As time ran out in regulation Idaho's Tanoris Shepard drove down the court,but J.S. Nash drew the charge and Shepard fouled out - and the game went intoovertime.

The Beavers had a 36-31 lead at the half, with Jackson's 18 points leadingthe way. OSU up by as much as 13 points in the first half.

The Vandals chipped away at the lead in the second half. Williams' 3-pointerwith 13:11 to go to put Idaho up for the first time at 46-45.

Oregon State finished 12-17 overall last season, and 4-14 in the Pac-10.Idaho went 9-19 overall last season and 6-12 in the Big West.
